This safe, painless ultrasound exam captures detailed images of the liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, and kidneys. It is commonly used to evaluate the cause of abdominal pain and detect a wide range of conditions, including gallstones, tumors, organ enlargement, and blockages.
What This Exam Can Detect

Liver: Size, shape, and position; fatty liver; masses; or blockages in bile ducts.

Gallbladder: Gallstones, inflammation, or obstruction of bile flow.

Spleen: Enlargement, damage, or disease.

Pancreas: Signs of inflammation, tumors, or other structural problems.

Kidneys: Size and condition; detection of masses, cysts, fluid buildup, or post-transplant changes; evaluation of recurrent urinary tract infections.

General Preparation Guidelines for Imaging Exams
Every imaging exam may have unique requirements. You will receive instructions at the time of scheduling, and for some exams, our staff will contact you 24–48 hours before your appointment with specific details. Please keep in mind:

Let us know in advance about any dietary restrictions, physical limitations, or special needs.

Ask ahead about recovery time and whether you will need a driver to assist with transportation.

Wear comfortable, metal-free clothing; you may be asked to change into a gown.

Arrive 20 minutes early to complete registration and provide any additional health information.

Upper Abdominal & Retroperitoneal Ultrasound Preparation
For this exam, patients must not eat or drink anything (including water) starting at midnight the night before the test.
